Architecture students engage with the city and its river

Following the success of last year's edition, once again the Monash University architecture students, currently in Prato, have engaged in a series of temporary installations in the city.  The theme this year is the river Bisenzio, its impact and influence on the identity of the city.

The official project launch, entitled "Multiple Entities", will be held at 2.00pm on Tuesday 7 October in the courtyard of the Monash Prato Centre, in via Pugliesi 26. Students will lead the way to each of the five selected sites that host their installations along the river.

Prato welcomes Australian Ambassador

Australian Ambassador, the Honourable Mike Rann, made his first official trip to Prato last month.

The recently appointed Australian Ambassador to Italy, San Marino, Libya and Albania, the Honourable Mike Rann made his first official trip to Prato to open the conference Encountering Australia: Transcultural Conversations held in Prato 24 - 26 September. 

In his opening address, the Ambassador praised Monash University’s vision in establishing the Prato Centre in 2001 and reflected on his own experience of immigration, noting that he had three citizenships.

Writer Archimede Fusillo meets Italian students

A truly original beginning of the school year for high school students at Liceo Copernico who met award-winning Australian writer Archimede Fusillo.

On Tuesday, 16 September, award-winning Australian author Archimede Fusillo met the students of Liceo Scientifico Copernico, a local secondary school, to present his work and talk about themes such as migration, cultural identity and the importance of storytelling. Archimede’s writing focuses primarily on the experiences of Italian migrants and their offspring in Australia, drawing particularly on his own life as the Australian born son of Italian parents.

Visual Residents connect in Prato

The 2014 Visual Residency Program was launched on Tuesday 9 September with a special welcome event called Visual Residency Night.

The evening, held at the Monash Prato Centre, was the first public event for Pat Foster and Jen Berean selected resident artists for 2014. The artists gave an overview on their previous works and provided a brief preview of their future projects.

Monash and Siena Universities address global warming

Professor Tapper speaks about the impact of climate at a conference held in Siena

One of the most prominent climate science specialists in the world, the Australian Nigel Tapper is part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which, together with former US Vice-President Al Gore, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

On the 4th September this year, at the conference on global climate change held at the University of Siena, Professor Tapper spoke about the impact of climate on large cities and possible solutions to adapt urban architecture and landscape to limit damage from global warming.

UNESCO Creative City experts visit Prato

On 28 July the Monash Prato Centre and Pratofutura held an international workshop which brought together UNESCO experts and local representatives to discuss Prato as Creative City.

 

Pratofutura and Monash would like to thank all those who participated in the 'Prato as Creative City International Workshop' on Monday 28 July 2014. Over 60 people attended, with representation from a cross-section of the Prato community including cultural associations, local government, schools and university, industry, and professional associations.

 

Monash Prato Centre summer closure

The Monash University Prato Centre will be closed for the European summer break from Saturday 9 August to Sunday 24 August 2014 inclusive.

The Centre will re-open on Monday 25 August 2014.
