Dr Greg French, Australian Ambassador to Italy
Promoting the rule of law: Reflections of an international legal adviser

Students of the Monash Law Program were fortunate to hear from Dr Greg French, Australian Ambassador to Italy, last week. Dr French spoke of his experiences as International Legal Advisor to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Focusing on three case studies, including his contribution to developing the international law of the sea to help prevent illegal fishing and promote sustainable use of the oceans; his involvment in the legal work surrounding the loss of flight MH17 in the Ukraine in 2014; and negotiating the Arms Trade Treaty to create an international legal framwork to regulate the trade in conventional arms; Dr French made a compelling case for the importance of the rule of law in governing a nation.

Dr French holds a Doctor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from Munster University, Germany and has previously served overseas as High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and as First Secretary in Bonn.

This visit marked the final guest lecture in a rich program of visits organised by the Faculty of Law in co-operation with the Monash University Prato Centre.
