The Monash University Prato Centre and the Monash Faculty of Education were honoured to be guests of the Associazione Italia-Australia to celebrate Australia Day this year.

This cultural association brings together people who are passionate about all things Australian. It also promotes educational, cultural and business exchanges between Italy and Australia. Each year the association holds a reception on the occasion of Australia Day. The evening was hosted by Mr Massimo Colomban, the Honorary Consul who represents Australia in the Veneto region, in the majestic setting of Castelbrando, one of the largest castles in Europe, situated in the hills of Treviso in the north of Italy.

Over 100 guests gathered to enjoy a rich program of presentations and performances with an Australian theme. Narelle McAuliffe, Acting Manager of the Monash University Prato Centre, Dr Rosalie Triolo, Senior Lecturer, and Rosa Sfameni, a student, in the Monash Faculty of Education, were invited to present the activities of the Monash Prato Centre and the Faculty of Education’s professional practicum program in schools in Prato which took place in January and February.

Dr Triolo gave a moving speech about her father’s experience migrating from Italy to Australia and its influence on her vocation in training future teachers. Rosa, who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts double degree, was able to put her Italian language skills into practice to share her experience of the Faculty of Education’s practicum program as well as stories about her Italian heritage which motivated her to apply to study in Prato. Ms Jo Tarnawsky, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Australian Embassy in Rome, and Ms Anna Fedeles, the Consul General in Milan, also attended the event.

The event was an excellent occasion to promote the Monash Prato Centre’s activities to a wide Italo-Australian audience as well as to meet others involved in Australian-Italian cultural and educational exchange initiatives.
