2016 Visual Resident Artist: Charlie Sofo

2016 Visual Resident Artist: Charlie Sofo

Exhibiting in group and solo shows since 2005, Charlie Sofo combines a variety of media including sculpture, video, installation, drawing and text.

Primarily concerned with the documentation and cataloguing of experiences – street walks and the variety of odours found in suburbs, the detritus removed from his running shoes, a video catalogue of lounging cats – Sofo’s taxonomic aesthetic is precise and humorous.

A selection of Sofo’s work was included under the title Fields (2010-11) in Unguided Tours: Anne Landa Award for Video and New Media Arts 2011 at the Art Gallery of NSW. Two video components of the installation were Touch (2010-11) – a record of the hands of the artists encountering a variety of natural and artificial textures – and I Wander (2010), a documentation of the artist walking through the backstreets and parks of the Melbourne suburb of Northcote.

In addition to being the recipient  of several awards and grants, Charlie Sofo recently held solo exhibitions including Set, at the Darren Knight Gallery, Sydney, 2015 and the Gertrude Contemporary, Studio 12, Melbourne, 2014. Other recent exhibitions are The Small Infinite, John Hansard Gallery, Southhampton, UK 2014, Melbourne Now, National Gallery of Victoria, 2013, Everyday Magic, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, 2013, Reinventing the Wheel: The Ready-made Century, curated by Charlotte Day, Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne, 2013.

During his residency at the Prato Centre, Charlie will develop a project of research, social engagement and art-making. Creating a new series of works using methods of writing, drawing, video and sculpture making.

When asked about his expectations regarding the residency Sofo replied:
For me, my interaction with Prato isn’t one of simply representing experience or exchange. Rather it is my hope that I will cultivate attentiveness to bodily experiences, of being “with” people and things. Through a process of collecting, walking, observing and note taking, I will seek to create a minor phenomenology. This process has the potential of allowing for moments of material poetry, pleasure and discovery.

Charlie Sofo will be resident artist at the Prato Centre from September to November 2016.
